Interview with Artist and Illustrator Mona Madl

Hi Mona.  First of all, we would like to get to know you.  Can you tell us a little about yourself?

Hello! My name is Mona Madl and I was born and raised in Salzburg, Austria. It is a country which is very influenced by old historic buildings, art and beautiful mountains. A lot of these influences were part of my journey of creativity which led me to the Art of Painting and Drawing. I currently work and live in Pennsylvania, USA.

When and how did you start painting?

I remember exactly my first “real drawing”. I was probably 11 years old and started my journey with a pencil. It was just a coincidence as I was sitting on the table on a warm summer afternoon and started to draw the bowl of fruit which was in front of me. I absolutely loved it and started to draw different things and also people. I knew, my passion was born.

What do you tell in your pictures?

As I was walking along old history walls of the medieval century, I often thought of how people back then built or made things. It absolutely fascinated me and I felt like I had to capture it in some ways. I started to draw sculptures and faces from other artworks because they truly inspired me. I felt like I could give those sculptures a “Renaissance” itself by painting it and just admiring it.

Which art movements were you influenced by when you started painting?

I loved Hyperrealism and Surrealism but mainly studied Light and Darkness in Paintings like Caravaggio. I would find myself wandering through museums and take it all in as all the different paintings influenced my art in an extreme way. I felt the need to combine them and to create something new.

Which art movement or movements do you feel close to right now?

I feel very close to abstract art – the movement and living colors in that aspect of art fascinate me and inspire me extremely.

What are you inspired by when painting?

When I paint my mind goes to different places on earth. It almost seems like a little time travel in my head. In there, I mostly go back to my home country Salzburg. To the mountains I used to hike and the peace I felt. It is a peace that never left me and fascinated me. Nature to me is the best kind of art, just wonderful all of God’s creation and it doesn’t fade – It doesn’t get boring. It is just simply perfect and that inspires me (I think) the most. All of creation and how wonderful it is made. There is nothing more perfect.

What do you do besides painting?

I love to be in the nature and hike mountains. It is surly one of my biggest passions. Besides that I really love to cook and enjoy my artistic skills there as well.

Do you have any projects that you plan to realize?

I have many paintings in my head which I would love to realize, but I would also love to start a new series on sculptures. Something I haven’t done before but I am extremely curious of how it would turn out. Thank you very much for the interview!
