‘Lost painting by Caravaggio’ taken under protection

While it is planned to be sold for 1500 euros at the auction, it is stated that the actual value of the withdrawn painting is maybe 50 million euros.

The work, which is thought to be a lost 17th-century painting by the famous Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, has been taken under protection in Spain.

The local government in Madrid declared the painting a “cultural heritage”.

The statement stated that the work was “an example of the mastery and perfection of Italian naturalism”, which also influenced Spanish painters.

The painting, which was planned to be sold for 1500 euros at an auction held in Spain earlier this year, was withdrawn when it was revealed that it could be a lost work by Caravaggio.

It is stated that the actual value of the painting, in which Jesus is seen whipped, is maybe 50 million euros.

Experts from the Prado Museum in Madrid state sufficient evidence that the painting belongs to Caravaggio.
